Facebook is a popular social media platform. But how many users care about their Facebook privacy settings and security? Billions of people are using this service. Facebook is the first thing most people will remember when they say the Internet. But most people use this without proper understanding, and most people use Facebook for engaging in frivolous and useless activities instead of using it for a beneficial purpose. It seems to me that only a few people benefit from this with a proper understanding.
However, when using Facebook, everyone should be concerned about their privacy and security. Some people seem to be unaware of the actions that can be taken. So I thought I’d educate you on some of the most important things you can do to stay safe online and protect your Facebook account.
If you read this article, I hope you already have a Facebook account and have some idea of how to use it. You can try the following measures on a computer as well as your phone. If you are unable to identify these steps using the Facebook Mobile App, you can access the Facebook Desktop Version through the web browser on your smartphone.

Well, first go to the Facebook profile as usual. As a basic step, you can change the visibility of your Birthday in About tab on your Profile. There is an option called ‘Contact and basic info’ in About section. Under that topic, you will find Contact Information, Website and Social Links, and Basic Information. You can change them all as you prefer. In here, I have changed the settings of birthday details. So, now only I can see my birthday because I like to keep it as a secret. There are some other options to choose from. We can set the visibility of the birthday as Public, Friends or Only me. It’s up to you to make a choice.
Now let’s move to the next step. Majority of the most important features are included in the Settings of the Facebook account. So, find Setting from the menu and click on it. You can see it from the picture below.
Facebook – Settings
Under the Settings of your account, there are General, Security & Login, Privacy, and many other settings to control the behaviour of your Profile. I am not going to explain to you about every Setting here. I will mention the most important facts that everyone should focus on.
General Settings
This General section features the basic account settings such as Username & Contact information. Here we can change them or add new info. If you have not set a username, you can set your own username here. Also, you can decide what happens to your account after you pass away. If your account is such an important one, it is good to consider this. Identity confirmation is in the bottom of the list. It is to confirm identity to do things such as running ads about some special things. This ID confirmation is not necessary for ordinary users. So, don’t think much about that.
Facebook Security settings and login settings
You should really care about these settings. Usually, a Facebook account contains many sensitive data. So, if there was unauthorized access, you would get into big troubles. I recommend you to set a strong password and use Two-Factor Authentication. After you enabled 2Factor Authentication, they (Facebook) will ask for a code if they notice an attempted login from an unrecognized device or browser.
As you can see, there are some other options to take actions for your security. Read them and try to understand their uses. One day, it will be helpful to you.
Facebook Profile Information
You can view or download your Facebook information in this section. If you need to temporarily deactivate or permanently delete your account, you can go to the ‘Deactivation and deletion’. This option will be useful in some emergency situations.
When you deactivated your account, it will no longer be visible to others on Facebook. Also, you can reactivate the account simply by logging in to your account as same as earlier. Then, it will be activated automatically.
Facebook Privacy Settings
As the fourth category in the list, there are Privacy options. These ‘Privacy Settings and Tools’ are very important. In my personal Facebook account, I have taken the following actions (check out the screenshot below.) to protect my privacy. I recommend you to use these Facebook privacy settings, but these settings may not suitable for everyone.
In Facebook Privacy Settings, users can limit guest access to prevent them from seeing their sensitive information and some other stuff in accounts. This is the main place to protect your privacy on Facebook by changing some settings.
Under the Facebook Privacy Settings & Tools, there are few options in the first section to manage the visibility of your activities. Here you can decide who can see your future posts. You can make everything public or adjust it as only friends can see. There is a feature to review all your posts and things you are tagged in. Also, you can limit the audience for posts you have shared with friends of friends or public.
You have the chance to change how people can find and contact you on Facebook. I have listed down my Facebook account’s privacy settings below. You don’t have to be like this. Just use it to get an idea.
- Who can send you friend requests? – Everyone
- Who can see your friends list? – Only me
- Who can look you up using the email address you provided? – Only me
- Who can look you up using the phone number you provided? – Only me
- Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your Profile? – Yes
Blocking
The ‘Blocking’ section is to manage blocking. You can use this to block users, messages, app invites, event invitations, apps, and pages. You can block annoying things by using these settings.
You will be able to maximize your security and stay safe in social media platforms like Facebook if you consider the above details and take necessary actions.
